Can an asphalt shingle roof handle Tahoe snow?
Yes, if it is built for it. Shingles are the most common roof on the South Shore and most of them do fine, but the ones that fail early fail for the same reasons: no ice-and-water shield at the eaves, cheap felt underlayment, poor attic ventilation, and starter and ridge details skipped to save time. Snow sitting on a shingle roof melts from the bottom where the attic warms it, runs down to the cold eave, and refreezes into an ice dam. Water backing up behind that dam is what ends up in your ceiling. Every shingle roof we install is designed around that exact sequence: a self-adhering membrane where the ice forms, a synthetic underlayment that will not wrinkle or tear, and ventilation that keeps the deck cold so less melting happens in the first place.
Why choose shingle over metal?
Cost and repairability. A quality architectural shingle roof costs meaningfully less than standing seam, it is easier to match and patch after storm damage, and a good installer can replace a section without disturbing the rest of the roof. For a home with a moderate pitch, decent sun exposure, and an owner who is not planning to hold it for forty years, shingle is often the sensible answer. We will tell you when it is not; a heavily shaded, low-pitch roof that already grows ice dams every winter is a candidate for metal or a hybrid approach, and we would rather say so than sell you a roof that fights its own site.
What we do differently on a shingle roof
We tear off to the deck and replace bad sheathing rather than roofing over problems. Ice-and-water shield goes at every eave, extending well above the interior wall line, plus every valley, sidewall, chimney and pipe. Metal drip edge goes on at eaves and rakes, and valleys are either open metal or woven according to what your roof needs. Starter strip is installed along eaves and rakes, ridge vents are cut in where the attic needs air, and ridge caps are a matching hip-and-ridge product, not cut-up field shingles. We nail by hand or with calibrated guns at the manufacturer's pattern so the roof qualifies for the manufacturer's full warranty, and we finish with a magnetic sweep of the yard and driveway.
Color and appearance
Architectural (dimensional) shingles come in weathered wood, slate, brown and charcoal blends that suit Tahoe cabins and newer homes. Class A fire-rated shingles are standard for the Basin. We bring physical samples to the estimate so you can see them against your siding and trim in daylight rather than choosing from a screen.
Materials we use on shingle roofs
Architectural shingles
Class A fire-rated dimensional shingles from major manufacturers, in blends that suit mountain homes. Thicker and longer-lasting than three-tab.
Synthetic underlayment
Woven polymer underlayment such as Titanium PSU across the whole deck. It stays flat, resists tearing in wind, and handles a snowy jobsite better than felt.
Ice-and-water shield
Self-adhering rubberized membrane where ice dams form: eaves, valleys, sidewalls, chimneys and every penetration.
Drip edge and valley metal
Metal edging at eaves and rakes and open-valley metal where runoff concentrates, so water is directed off the roof, not under it.
Ridge ventilation
Continuous ridge vents paired with intake at the eaves keep the attic and deck cold, which is the single best defense against ice dams.
Flashings and boots
New step flashing at sidewalls, counterflashing at chimneys, and high-quality pipe boots. Old flashing is not reused.

How long does a shingle roof last in South Lake Tahoe?
Architectural shingles typically give around 20 to 25 years in our climate when installed with proper underlayment and ventilation; snow, ice and high-altitude sun shorten the life of roofs that skip those details. Metal lasts roughly twice as long but costs more up front.
Do I need ice-and-water shield on the whole roof?
Usually not. Code and good practice call for it at the eaves, extending past the interior wall line, plus valleys and penetrations. On low-pitch or heavily shaded roofs we may recommend more coverage, and we will explain why on the estimate.
Can you repair my shingle roof instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the roof is under about 15 years old and the problem is localized, a repair is the right call. We will tell you honestly at the inspection when a repair is throwing good money at a roof that needs replacing.
Are your shingles fire rated?
Yes. We install Class A fire-rated shingle assemblies as standard, which is what the Tahoe Basin's wildfire exposure calls for.
